Rovaniemi, Levi, Saariselkä or Inari for the Northern Lights?

Where to base a northern lights trip in Finnish Lapland: road distances, what the Finnish Meteorological Institute says, and the tours from each base.

Updated November 2026

Base yourself in Rovaniemi for a short trip built around one or two hunts: it has its own airport and a wide choice of evening tours that drive to wherever the sky is clearest. Stay in Levi or Saariselkä if you want a resort further north, and book a hunt that collects you there, such as Arctic GM Experiences OY’s Levi: Northern Lights Tour with Guaranteed Sightings, from US$200 on promotion, usually US$222 a person (checked November 2026).

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The Levi hunt takes up to 8 guests, picks up from your accommodation in Levi, and gives a full refund if no Northern Lights are captured by camera during the tour or if the weather prevents the tour from starting. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.

What the Finnish Meteorological Institute says

Illustration: a soft green aurora band over a rounded snow-covered fell and a frozen spruce forest at night in Finnish Lapland, under a clear starry sky
Illustration. A clear night over a fell further north.

The institute puts the chance of seeing auroras on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% of nights in Lapland, giving the ski resorts of Ylläs, Levi and Saariselkä as examples, and about 75% at Kilpisjärvi in the far north-west. Rovaniemi is not on its list, and it gives no figure for the town. The further north, the better the odds on a clear night.

The condition carries the weight. A night counts only when it is dark and free of cloud, so the figures say nothing about how often the sky is clear at either place. On a cloudy night, a hunt that can drive a long way in any direction is what gives you a chance. That is why the Rovaniemi hunts compared here drive 120 km, 200 km or more when they need to, and several cross into Sweden.

Rovaniemi: a hunt from town

Rovaniemi has its own airport, and the town’s hunts start from city-centre meeting points or collect you from your accommodation. Santa Claus Village, where the Arctic Circle line is marked in the central square, is eight kilometres north of the centre; santaclausvillagerovaniemi.com covers the village itself, from getting there to what it costs.

On a short stay, the town’s refund-or-rebook terms matter more than latitude. BookLapland's hunt offers a 100% refund or the next available night if no aurora is captured on camera, and Experience Tours Lapland's a free place on another hunt, as many times as you need.

Levi: a ski resort further north

Levi’s evening tours start from the resort. Arctic GM Experiences OY’s small-group hunt above runs typically 6 to 10 hours in a 4x4 van with thermal overalls, hot drinks and photos. Keo Wilderness takes a slower evening: a 15-minute drive to a remote lake, snowshoes, a shelter with a fire and roasted sausages, and a telescope for the stars and the moon, with no promise of the lights. It does not take children under 8 or people over 80, and picks up within 5 km of Levi.

Saariselkä and Inari: the far north

Saariselkä, 258 km by road from Rovaniemi, has short evening tours rather than long hunts. Arctic Timetravels runs a 3-hour photography tour by minivan with pickup within 15 km of the centre; seeing the lights cannot be guaranteed. Lapponia Tours offers a 2.5-hour reindeer sleigh evening with a fire, and flash photography is not allowed.

Around Inari and Ivalo, Arctic Guides Oy hunts by car for 4 hours with warm drinks and a short photography lesson, and needs a minimum of 2 people for a first booking. Ivalo Safaris takes you by snowmobile sleigh to Lake Inari for a home-made dinner by an open fire.
